Upload files to your site using FTP
The following instructions should help you if you are having trouble using FTP software. (To learn more about FTP, please visit our FTP Information page.)
In order to use FTP to upload files to your web site, you'll first need to download FTP software if you don't have any already. For Windows users, we recommend WS_FTP LE or CuteFTP and for Mac users we recommend Fetch. The following instructions will be based on WS_FTP 5.08 LE.
- Open WS_FTP and you will notice a window that pops up where you can enter the information of the site you want to connect to.
- Press the New button and enter the appropriate information in the blank text areas. The information you will need is the Host Address, your User Name, and your Password. Also, make sure Automatic Detect is selected as the Host Type, and if you would like to save the password for later use, select Save Pwd. Please see the picture below to see a sample connection window.
- Click on the OK button and you will be connected to the site. If a red error message is shown at the bottom, double check the site information to make sure you typed everything correctly.
- Once you have connected to the site, you will see two lists of files: the files on your computer will be on the left, and the files on your web site server will be on the right. First, you will need to find the files on your computer that you would like to upload to the web server. You can browse your file directories by using the green arrow or by double-clicking the folders listed in a particular directory. Above each file listing you will see the name and path of the folder you are in. Once you have found the appropriate folder on your computer, do the same with the host directory.
- After you have found the file you want to upload and the directory on the web server you want to upload the file to, select the file by clicking on it once, and hit the --> button to copy the file to the web server.
- Once you have completed the file transfer(s), click on the Close button in the bottom left corner to close the connection, and then click on Exit to close the program.
Here are some tips that might help you while using WS_FTP:
- To download a file from your web site, just highlight the file name and press the <-- button.
- You can select multiple files to upload or download by holding the Ctrl button on your keyboard while single-clicking on the names of the files you want to transfer.
- If you have closed a connection and would like to re-connect to your site, just click on the Connect button in the bottom left corner of the main WS_FTP window.
- To rename a file, highlight it by single-clicking on the name and click on the Rename button to the right of the file list.
- To create a new folder/directory, click on MkDir, and then type the name of the folder in the popup box that appears.
